Real-World Performance Review: Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art

From street photography and documentary work to weddings and video production, wide-angle lenses have always been indispensable for photographers looking to create compelling images with strong storytelling potential. However, in this segment, photographers have traditionally had to make a choice: either a fast aperture or a versatile zoom range. When it comes to sports photography in particular, combining a wide zoom range with a fast aperture has long seemed almost impossible. Now, Sigma is taking the revolution it started with the 18-35mm F1.8 to an entirely new level with the Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art.

Review by Adem MELEKE

We know that Sigma changed the game years ago with the 18-35mm F1.8. Now, the Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art takes that legacy even further, emerging as a highly compelling option, particularly for APS-C users.

One of the biggest challenges for photographers like me who use Canon RF-mount cameras is the still-limited selection of third-party lenses available for the system. As a result, I hadn't been paying much attention to third-party lenses released for the RF mount—until I spotted this lens at the Sigma Showroom, a lens I hadn't even known existed. The moment I saw it, I wanted to try it. The prospect of finding out what it could do from my position under the basket at a basketball game made me even more curious.

Those who remember my review from our previous issue will recall that the Sigma 300-600mm F4 DG OS Sports lens surprised me considerably. My expectations of Sigma lenses were therefore already high. And let me be very clear: the Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art not only met my expectations but also delivered enjoyable results that exceeded even my own expectations, thanks to its remarkably versatile zoom range combined with a constant wide aperture.

Design and Build Quality

We have become accustomed to the Art series' signature qualities: solid construction, a substantial feel, and a reassuring sense of durability. The 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art continues this tradition. Its most remarkable feature is its ability to deliver an F1.8 aperture throughout this zoom range. This is a significant engineering achievement, and one that becomes evident in actual use.

The lens is not particularly compact, but it is well balanced. I used it with the Canon EOS R3, and the combination worked very well. Given that the R3 is not exactly a lightweight camera body, expecting an exceptionally light setup would be unrealistic. Even so, the overall balance of the system remained acceptable. After all, this lens is not designed to prioritize low weight; its primary focus is performance.

Optical Performance

The constant F1.8 aperture is one of this lens's greatest strengths. It offers significant advantages in low-light conditions, background separation, and subject emphasis.

I tested the lens in a basketball arena, where lighting was highly uneven and I constantly needed to shoot at fast shutter speeds. Under such conditions, one might expect a wide-angle lens to show some softness toward the corners when used wide open at F1.8. However, that was not the case here.

Based on my results, the lens delivers impressive sharpness even at F1.8, while image quality becomes almost flawless around F2.8. I can also say that corner performance remains highly impressive across the aperture range.

This may sound like a bold claim, but looking at the results, I can confidently say that the lens offers a level of sharpness capable of competing with many excellent prime lenses at focal lengths around 24–28mm and 35mm.

Conclusion

Although I only had the opportunity to use it during a basketball game, the Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art stands out as a powerful option, particularly for street photographers, video content creators, and wedding and event photographers.

This lens challenges the traditional dilemma of choosing between a prime lens and a zoom. It combines sharpness that comes remarkably close to that of prime lenses with the flexibility of a zoom, all while offering an impressive F1.8 aperture.

Ultimately, I can confidently say this: the Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 is the kind of lens that is likely to remain in your camera bag for a very long time.
