Canon Expands the Capabilities of Its Cinema EOS Range with New Firmware Updates

Canon Introduces New Features for Broadcasting and Virtual Production, Enhanced Filmmaking Capabilities and Greater Customisation Options, Alongside Speedlite Flash Support for the EOS C50

In response to customer feedback and evolving production requirements, Canon is introducing updates that bring new features for broadcasting and virtual production, enhanced filmmaking capabilities and greater customisation options, as well as Speedlite flash support for the EOS C50. These improvements reinforce Canon's commitment to continuously evolving its professional imaging product range to meet the changing needs of filmmakers, broadcasters and professionals creating content across different formats.

Enhanced Broadcasting and Virtual Production Workflows

The firmware update introduces Multi-Matrix Support to the EOS C400, EOS C80 and EOS C50, providing greater control over image colours and saturation across specific colour axes. This feature offers increased precision when matching colours across multiple cameras and working with LED volumes, helping cameras integrate more seamlessly into existing real-time colour workflows.

Further enhancements also support demanding broadcasting and virtual production environments. These include improved CV metadata for focus and zoom encoder data, Black Level adjustment when shooting in Canon Log 2 or Canon Log 3, and Image Stabilisation support for lenses exceeding 1,000 mm. In addition, audio output support in Slow & Fast Motion mode provides greater flexibility for productions that switch between high-speed sports footage and post-match interviews.

Expanded Filmmaking Capabilities

For professional filmmakers using the EOS C400 and EOS C80, the update extends autofocus support in Slow & Fast Motion mode to additional frame rates between 60p and 120p, including 72p, 75p, 90p and 96p. This allows users to benefit from Canon's enhanced autofocus tracking across a wider range of slow-motion shooting scenarios for narrative films, documentaries, commercials and music videos.

The update also improves the information displayed on screen, including additional indicators for Base ISO and fan status, making it easier for users to monitor essential camera settings and operating conditions while shooting.

Speedlite Flash Support for the EOS C50

The firmware update further enhances the versatility of the EOS C50 by enabling the use of compatible Canon Speedlite flash accessories via its Multi-Function Accessory Shoe. This improvement is particularly valuable for professional photographers and hybrid content creators, including those covering weddings and events, who want to capture high-quality still photographs using flash alongside video recording at the same event.

Supported accessories include EL and EX series Speedlites, Macro Flashes and Speedlite Transmitters.

Greater Customisation and Control

In response to customer requests, the update introduces additional customisation options for RF lens buttons, camera control dials and assignable buttons on the EOS C400, EOS C80 and EOS C50. Users can assign functions to buttons and dials to gain quick access to a wider range of features, including autofocus, digital tele-converter, sensor mode and exposure settings.

These enhancements allow professionals to tailor camera operation to their individual shooting styles and workflows, improving efficiency and providing more intuitive control on set.

Canon continues to evolve its Cinema EOS range to meet the diverse needs of production environments by introducing new features and improvements based on feedback from professional users. This helps customers maximise the potential of their existing equipment while offering greater flexibility to those considering a new camera system.

The new firmware updates for the EOS C400, EOS C80 and EOS C50 will be available to download free of charge from December 2026 via Canon's official support website.
