Sony Introduces the Newest Lightweight 400mm and 600mm G Master™ Super-Telephoto Prime Lenses

At approximately 1 kg, the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS combine their lightweight and well-balanced designs with the high resolution, impressive bokeh, and fast autofocus performance characteristic of the G Master series.

Sony has introduced two new G Master™ super-telephoto prime lenses developed for the Alpha™ full-frame E-mount system: the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS. Offering focal lengths of 400mm and 600mm respectively, the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS stand out as the world’s lightest¹ lenses in their respective categories.

The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS weighs approximately 994 g², while the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS weighs approximately 995 g². Thanks to their lightweight construction, the lenses provide a high degree of freedom of movement during dynamic shooting situations that require photographers to follow surrounding subjects and capture opportunities as they arise. Their carefully optimized weight distribution also makes handheld shooting easier, allowing photographers to maintain their framing more comfortably while tracking moving subjects such as birds, wildlife, and sports.

The new lenses deliver the high resolution and natural bokeh performance characteristic of the G Master series at super-telephoto focal lengths, enabling photographers to capture even the finest details of distant subjects. Fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance helps capture fast-moving subjects at critical moments.

Commenting on the new lenses, Jazz Sidharh, Lens and Accessories Marketing Manager, Imaging Products and Solutions, Sony Europe, said, “When capturing subjects such as birds, wildlife, and sports with super-telephoto lenses, ease of use and portability are just as important as high imaging performance. Photographers also need to carry their equipment with them while tracking their subjects. With the world’s lightest designs in their respective categories¹, the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS therefore offer high portability and ease of use. The FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS allows photographers to maintain an appropriate distance while capturing even the finest details of subjects that are difficult to approach from afar. The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS, meanwhile, makes it possible to create compelling images by making the subject stand out strongly in the frame while incorporating the background into the composition. With its long 600mm focal length, the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS can render difficult-to-approach subjects larger in the frame, creating a strong visual impact. We will continue to expand our super-telephoto lens lineup, offering alternatives suited to different subjects and shooting styles while broadening the creative possibilities available to content creators.”

Lightweight, Compact, and Well-Balanced Design for Super-Telephoto Shooting

Weighing approximately 994 g², the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and approximately 995 g², the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS offer the world’s lightest designs¹ in their respective categories.

The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS has a maximum diameter of approximately 108 mm and a length of 242 mm, while the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS has a maximum diameter of approximately 108 mm and a length of 263 mm. Their compact dimensions and lightweight construction make the lenses easy to carry while also providing comfortable control during handheld shooting.

The balanced design positions the center of gravity closer to the camera body, making it easier to keep subjects within the frame, track moving subjects, and perform panning shots. This design is particularly useful in environments where using a tripod or monopod is difficult, as well as during extended periods of handheld shooting, giving photographers greater flexibility when tracking subjects in super-telephoto photography.

High Resolution and Natural Bokeh Characteristic of the G Master Series

The new optical design consists of three Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and one ED glass element. These elements effectively reduce chromatic aberration and other optical distortions that can occur at super-telephoto focal lengths, delivering high resolution from the center to the corners of the image. Sony’s Nano AR Coating II technology significantly reduces ghosting and flare even in backlit conditions, helping photographers achieve clear and sharp images. The 11-blade circular aperture, together with precisely controlled spherical aberration during both the design and manufacturing processes, produces the natural and smooth bokeh characteristic of the G Master series.

Fast and Precise AF with Built-In Image Stabilization for Moving Subjects

Two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors and a control algorithm specifically optimized for the lenses provide fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance. This enables reliable tracking of fast-moving subjects such as birds, wildlife, and sports. When used with the Alpha 9 III, both lenses support high-speed continuous shooting at up to 120 frames per second³ with AF/AE tracking.

The built-in optical image stabilization system helps reduce the effects of camera shake during handheld shooting at super-telephoto focal lengths. The lenses also support Active Mode image stabilization and coordinated body-lens image stabilization control⁴ on compatible camera bodies. This helps reduce blur during handheld shooting, enabling high-quality photography and video recording. For video shooting, they are also compatible with focus breathing compensation⁵, which corrects changes in the angle of view that occur when the focus position changes.

Advanced Control and Reliability for Super-Telephoto Shooting

Four customizable focus hold buttons positioned around the lens barrel provide quick access to frequently used functions from different shooting positions. The FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS and FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS also feature a function ring, focus range limiter, Continuous DMF switch, focus mode switch, and image stabilization mode switch, providing quick and intuitive control for different shooting styles. Compatible with Sony’s optional teleconverters⁶, the FE 400mm F4.5 GM OSS can achieve a focal length of up to 800mm, while the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS can reach up to 1,200mm. Designed with dust and moisture resistance in mind⁷, the lenses offer reliable operation in a variety of outdoor conditions. The fluorine coating on the front lens element helps reduce the adhesion of dirt and other contaminants to the surface.
