Sony has introduced the FE 8-14mm F3.5, its first fisheye zoom G Lens™ designed for full-frame Alpha™ E-mount cameras. Covering an 8-14mm zoom range, the new lens provides a circular fisheye perspective at 8mm and a diagonal fisheye perspective at 14mm, allowing users to switch between different compositions with a single lens.
Designed for landscape, architecture, sports, and video production, the FE 8-14mm F3.5 combines a compact and lightweight design with the high-resolution performance and fast, precise autofocus of the G Lens series, along with advanced features for both photography and video shooting. When used in a dual-lens configuration with the VENICE Extension System Mini¹, the lens also supports the production of spatial content, including VR.
Offering photographers, cinematographers, and content creators new creative possibilities, the FE 8-14mm F3.5 adds the ability to capture different fisheye perspectives with a single zoom lens to Sony’s E-mount lens lineup.
Different Fisheye Perspectives from 8mm to 14mm
The FE 8-14mm F3.5’s 8-14mm zoom range allows users to switch between different fisheye perspectives with a single compact lens. At 8mm, the lens provides a circular fisheye perspective with a 180-degree angle of view, creating a circular image on a full-frame sensor. At 14mm, it delivers a diagonal fisheye perspective with a 180-degree diagonal angle of view that covers the entire frame.
This zoom range allows users to easily adjust the angle of view and composition according to the subject and creative intent in landscape, architecture, sports, and video production.
High-Resolution G Lens Performance Throughout the Zoom Range
The optical design, featuring ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass and aspherical elements, helps reduce chromatic and other optical aberrations across the entire image area, delivering high resolution throughout the zoom range.
At the 14mm end, the lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.15m and a maximum magnification ratio of 0.22x, enabling creative fisheye perspectives for close-up shots. This allows both photographers and videographers to move closer to their subjects and create images with a more pronounced fisheye effect.
Compact and Lightweight Design for Handheld, Gimbal, and Rig Shooting
Measuring approximately 63.1mm in maximum diameter, 82.8mm in length, and weighing only 314g, the FE 8-14mm F3.5 is designed for easy handling in handheld shooting as well as productions using gimbals and rigs. The internal zoom mechanism minimizes changes in the center of gravity during zooming, contributing to a balanced shooting experience.
When two VENICE Extension System Minis and FE 8-14mm F3.5 lenses are used side by side in a dual-lens configuration, the optical axes can be positioned approximately 64mm apart. This configuration, which is close to the average distance between human eyes, helps create a natural sense of depth and distance and supports the production of spatial content, including VR.
Fast and Precise Autofocus for Both Photography and Video
The FE 8-14mm F3.5 delivers fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance, while its Linear Response MF (Manual Focus) feature provides precise control for both photography and video shooting. Its design also helps reduce focus breathing during video production, contributing to more consistent framing.
The lens features a focus mode switch, zoom lock, and a de-clickable aperture ring. Its dust- and moisture-resistant design² provides reliable operation for outdoor shooting, while a fluorine coating on the front lens element helps protect against contaminants such as dirt, water, and fingerprints.
