The exhibition of NarPhotos Photography Collective member Erhan Arık's work titled 'Gayan', which traces the Armenian communities that spread to the Middle East after 1915, can be visited at Tophane Depo until 16 October.
Photographer Erhan Arık focuses on the intertwinedness of past and present and the Armenians' memory of 1915 in "Gayan", where he traces the Armenian communities in Iraq, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Iran and Jordan, as well as in Turkey and Armenia, where Armenians clung to life in the Middle East after 1915.
“Gayan” consists of photographs taken by Arık between 2014 and 2016 in Tehran, Isfahan, Zakho, Duhok, Beirut, Jubeil, Antilyas, Anjar, Amman, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, El Izariya, Yerevan, Ashtarak, Antakya and Armenian neighborhoods and villages in Istanbul.
The camps where the Armenians who survived after 1915 gathered and lived first in tents and later mostly in tin-roofed huts are called "gayan". In this respect, Gayan expresses the great losses experienced in the memory of Armenians and their efforts to survive.
You can also purchase the artist's book, Gayan, from Depo. The exhibition can be seen at the Depot until October 16.
