Barbare Studio's First Exhibition "Sense of Place" Opens in Tekirdağ on September 14

Barbare Studio's first exhibition, "Sense of Place", opens on September 14 at Barbare Bağları in Tekirdağ, curated by T. Melis Golar.

Barbare Studio, the new platform launched by Barbare Bağları, which has been in operation since 2002, presents its first guest artist/curator project and exhibition. “Sense of Place”; It emphasizes co-production by bringing together local and foreign, first-time and experienced artists.

The exhibition, which invites artists to produce works in vineyards, takes place during the harvest, which is considered sacred and comes with its abundance and is celebrated with festivities. Exhibition; It is called "Sense of Place" with reference to the French word "terroir", which means the combination of factors such as soil, climate and environment used in wine production and giving the wine its unique character. This definition also poetically represents man's connection with nature. Etymologically, man's characterization as a being that feels and lives the place emphasizes that the human-nature relationship continues despite all distances and that he has not broken his ties with nature yet.

The exhibition sets out to listen, feel and understand all the elements that add soul to the vineyard, and believes in the value of being on the land while producing. For this reason, Barbare Studio, which positions its artist residency program within the vineyards, aims to work with local producers, craftsmen and researchers. The exhibition integrates with the geography, climate, ecological diversity, border and history where Barbare is located, calling for a polyphonic structure in harmony. It aims to make the invisible visible, to track in nature, to create a balancing force, to nourish and to make observation effective. Vineyards are preparing to inspire new bonds with non-humans.

“Sense of Place” appears as the first part of the artist-in-residence and curator program. The curator guest of the program will be T. Melis Golar for three years. It will present a structure that articulates and learns from each other as a result of the artists' research on what Barbare Vineyards offer, their responses and the productions they create, and each exhibition will inspire the title of the next exhibition. The series, which focuses on process rather than results and resembles the introduction, development and conclusion sections of a text, will present a curatorial perspective and archive obtained through experience, research and findings at the end of three years. This approach aims to master the land, geography and history in the long term and to present new readings of the place through different topics.

Artists in the exhibition:

Dilşad Aladağ, Valentina Bacci, Serra Bilgincan, Dilan Bozer, Didem Erk, Berkay Kahvecioğlu, Murat Kahya, Milo Kester, Lalin Mercan, Rhian Harris Mussi, Sam Nicholson, Büşra Özdemir, Furkan Öztekin, Arthur Rabut, Eda Şarman, Cengiz Tekin, Murat Yıldız.

The "Sense of Place" exhibition awaits its visitors until 13 November in order to understand the lands of Thrace, to establish and reinterpret mythological, biological, topographic and linguistic relationships and to feel the place.

About Barbare Studio:

Barbare Studio is a collaborative multidisciplinary art platform born in the Barbare Vineyards, a family vineyard in the heart of Thrace. With the financial and moral support and hosting of Barbare Bağları and his family, he creates space for artists in Turkey. It aims to add depth to man's relationship with this geography by considering art and viticulture together. It aims to create a collaborative environment that creates resistance against climate change in a globalizing world, recycles what art and land offer, and produces with collective consciousness. It achieves this through accommodation programs and events hosted by Barbare Vineyards. It is the land itself that displays works of art that delve deeply into our relationship with the environment and ourselves. Barbare Studio brings the rural and urban closer, diversifying the experience.
