Sony's farthest distance prime lens with high-performance AF, high resolution and beautiful bokeh is the lightest in its class.
Sony has announced the release of the new FE 600mm F4 GM OSS super telephoto prime lens (model SEL600F40GM), the latest impressive addition to its flagship full-frame G Master series lens range.
Sony's longest distance prime lens, 600mm, produces exceptional image quality with extraordinary focusing speed and sensitivity, thanks to many of the company's advanced optical and mechanical technologies. Weighing only approximately 3,040 grams, the lightest in its class, the FE 600mm F4 GM OSS offers an extremely balanced design to ensure the best possible shooting experience. Combined with the acclaimed FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS lens, the new 600mm offers professional sports, wildlife and news photographers more options to capture subjects from long distances with the utmost precision and detail.
Commenting on the new lens, Sony Europe Digital Imaging Product Marketing Director Yann Salmon Legagneur said, "Our growing E-mount lens range now includes 51 lenses, 33 of which are full-frame, with the two new lenses we have just announced. The 10th model of our flagship G Master series, the new 600mm F4 raises the bar for speed, mobility and control in a super telephoto prime lens. Extended 600mm "Combining this access with features such as 20 fps shooting and 60 times per second AF/AE calculations on the α9, or the extremely high resolution and high speed performance on the α7R III, allows professional photographers to create images that were previously impossible to capture."
Fast, Precise and Quiet Autofocus
To make the most of the highly advanced autofocus systems of Sony's latest full-frame E-mount cameras, the new FE 600mm F4 GM OSS lens features two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors that power the lens' focus group, providing fast, precise AF and reliable subject tracking. Thanks to these motors, supported by specially developed motion algorithms to both minimize lag and instability and control noise levels, the lens has an exceptionally fast, precise and quiet autofocus performance, making it possible to easily capture dynamic, fast-moving athletes or wildlife.
Excellent G Master Image Quality and Bokeh
A member of Sony's flagship G Master series of lenses, this new large-aperture super-telephoto prime lens preserves exceptional image quality and detail with tremendous contrast and resolution right to the corners of the photo. The unique optical design features a large XA (extreme aspherical) and an ED (extra low dispersion) element, which effectively suppress all aberrations common in telephoto lenses, as well as three fluorine elements that help minimize chromatic aberration and suppress any amount of color bleeding. Sony's latest bokeh simulation technologies and the XA part are used to control spherical aberrations and achieve precise bokeh.
The lens, which also has an 11-blade circular diaphragm mechanism that contributes to high bokeh quality in images, is coated with Sony's original Nano AR coating to suppress any unwanted reflection, glare or ghosting in photographs.
Compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2.0x E-mount teleconverters, the new FE 600mm F4 GM OSS produces outstanding imaging performance at extended focal lengths while maintaining fast, precise AF performance.
Lightweight, Balanced Design
As the lightest member of its class, the new super telephoto prime lens, weighing only approximately 3,040 grams, provides a level of portability and maneuverability never before achieved in a lens of its kind. Based on the technology of the highly praised FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS lens, the lightweight design of the new 600mm lens is achieved through the use of three fluorine elements and a reduced number of elements located at the front of the barrel. The use of magnesium alloy also minimizes weight and volume.
The front-heavy lens design, which the new 600mm lens inherits from the FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS, reduces the moment of inertia that resists rotation, ensuring faster and more precise planning when shooting handheld or on one leg.
Durability, Reliability and Control
Sony's new FE 600mm F4 GM OSS lens is built with a durable magnesium alloy and strong, lightweight carbon fiber hood to withstand the rigors of sporting events and wildlife photography. The front part of the lens, which is also dust and moisture resistant, is coated with fluorine to resist dirt and fingerprints.
Among the many control buttons on the lens is a customizable focus lock button at four different points located on the lens barrel, which can be programmed to control features when desired. There's also a 'Full-Time DMF' button for instantly switching to manual focus at any time, and a focus ring with Linear Response MF for good, responsive manual focusing.
Additionally, the new lens features built-in optical stabilization for dynamic action and three different 'Mode' settings, including a Mode 3 setting with an advanced algorithm that allows for easier framing when tracking moving subjects. There is also a function ring with selectable 'Preset' and 'Function' settings and a filter holder suitable for ø 40.5mm ND and other filter types as well as the optional VF-DCPL1 Circular Polarizing Filter. Once attached to the lens, the VF-DCPL1 filter can be rotated to achieve the desired polarization.
